12 Ways to Get rid gnats in plants

It is very unfortunate to see gnats in plants, especially when you see them on your favorite indoor plants.

House plant gnats are commonly seen around indoor plants with high moisture content in the soil. These plant gnats or fungus gnats usually depend on the fungus that grows in the moist soil and consumes the fungus as their food to grow.

When you spot any gnats on plant, the first and foremost activity is to isolate that plant and put it under quarantine so to avoid other plants getting by the plant flies.

1. Remove moisture and stop watering

When you see gnats flying around the indoor plants top watering your indoor plants for 2-3 days.This is to reduce the dampness in the soil. Drain the excess water from the pots. Not all plants need to be watered every day or every week. Some plants may need to only once in a month.

2. Use Sprinklers

Use sprinklers to water the indoor plants, this is to avoid overwatering the plants. When you overwater indoor plants, the water stagnates and forms the origin of gnats in plants.

3. Baking the potting soil to remove gnats in plants

Whether it is new or used soil, bake the soil for about an hour around 250 F degrees and leave it to settle the hotness for one hour. Now your potting soil is free from fungus, germs and insects. so that the risk of transfering gnats in plants from one pot to another is mitigated.

4. When Transplanting rinse the roots

When you want to transplant the plants from one pot to another to minimize the risk or to avoid gnat infestation, take out the roots from the soil and rinse it well with water and transplant into a new post using the baked potting soil.

5. Avoid watering from the top of the plants

Always water the indoor plant right at the bottom of the stem and don't over water to create dampness in the soil that can open the doors for gnats move into plants and lay eggs.

6. Keep it in sunlight and change the soil

The best way to get rid of gnats in house plants is to sprinkle water on the leaves to wash away all the gnat infestation and gnats eggs from leaves.

After sprinkling, Keep the plant in sunlight so that sunlight kills the fungus and change the old soil completely with fresh baked pot soil. Changing the soil will also give a boost to plants as they can extract nutrients from the fresh soil that is free from insects and germs.

7. Dispose off the plants affected with fungus gnats

When you find any of in-house plants are affected due gnats then it is better to remove that plant from the pot and dispose of it safely. Take the plant out completely and bag it fully inside a plastic cover. This is the safe way to dispose of the fungus affected plants without getting spread to other plants.

Please do try with replacing the soil for those plants which are completely affected. The affected plants never recover.

8. Homemade Rubbing alcohol Spray

You will need the following things to prepare the home made spray to kill the gnats.

Things Required

  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Spray bottle
  • Bowl

Directions to Prepare

Mix one cup of rubbing alcohol with one quarter of water. Stir the mixture well and add it to a plastic hand spray bottle. Your gnat spray is ready to use.

Spray this solution to your plants leaves by approaching the plants gently and try not to disturb the existing gnats. The best time to apply this gnat spray to your plants is early morning, before the sunrise. It surprises the gnats in plants as they will be lazy dwelling in the damp soul. 

Spray the coat to the plant to all leaves and down through the steam. When you see some fruit flies in plant are fleeing off, try to hit them with this alcohol spray.

Tip: Repeat this spray on the plants 3 days once until all the gnat are killed and your plant is free from gnat infection.

Warning

Not all the house plants can withhold the alcohol spray, so please spray a little on one leaf, leave it for 2 days and check if the leaf doesn't turn into yellow color or no signs of damage then apply the spray to the entire plant. If the plant leaf turned in yellow spots or damaged then you must understand the concentration of alcohol is very high for the plant to bear, add one quart of water to the existing solution and repeat the exercise.

9. Soaking with mild chlorine bleach

Sometimes you never know whether the plants are infected by gnats or not. If you have mild doubt in your mind soak the plant you want to transplant in a mild chlorine bleach and rinse it with water. This will wash away all the harmful micro-organs as well as plant gnats infections.

10. Covering up the soil with activate carbon (Charcoal)

To prevent the Plant insects attack on the soil surface of in house plants.Spread the charcoal over the potting soil, this acts as a filtration layer and it will be impenetrable layer for the gnats to infect the soil and roots of the plant

11. Antiseptic liquids

Wash and Clean your house using antiseptic liquids mixed with water. Ensure the corners and crevices of your home are dried so not give another chance for the gnats infestation.

12. Open up your window and allow more sunlight

Finally, open your window and allow sunlight to fall on the plants. This will help in photosynthesis as well as sunlight will remove the dampness from the plants as well as gnats in plants.
